A Reading & Discussion*
w/ Rob Halpern

Friday, April 4, 7:00 pm

Rainbow Bookstore Cooperative
426 W. Gilman
Madison, WI 53703

Rob Halpern’s writing activates a lyric voice shot-through with linguistic debris and media fallout. In the confusion of our current geo-political conflicts, his poems make the fatal abstractions of crisis audible—finance, militarization, war—by implicating the lyric voice in the materialization of those abstractions. Halpern’s most recent book, Music for Porn, moves across the landscape of battlefields and homoerotic affect in an encompassing engagement of desire and death (from Eastern Michigan’s website and Nightboat Books). Halpern is faculty in the Creative Writing Department at Eastern Michigan University. He received his Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz (2006), where he wrote a dissertation on the prehistory of literary modernism in nineteenth-century France. For more, see Rob Halpern’s bio and this interview, where Halpern discusses his work’s relation to “somatics.”

At this event, Halpern will read from various works, including new work related to Guantanamo Bay detainees.

*In preparation for the post-reading discussion, some folks will be meeting to discuss Music for Porn and an essay Rob has shared with us.  The meeting will be Sunday, March 30 at 7pm. Please feel free to email avitale (at) wisc (dot) edu for the location and the readings.
